TikTok is building a super app

TikTok’s Super App Playbook: Restaurant Guides, Payments, Travel Booking and More

TikTok doesn’t want to be just a place to scroll anymore. This week the company added an in-app restaurant guide, and reports say it’s also working on sending money through direct messages. Together, those moves point to a bigger goal: becoming a “super app” that handles much of your digital life.

Quick Facts

  • Company: TikTok, now primarily under new U.S. ownership since January 2026
  • Latest feature: “Must Eat” restaurant guide, announced this week
  • In development: Peer-to-peer payments over direct messages, per Bloomberg
  • Model it’s chasing: China’s WeChat, which combines messaging, payments and services

What Is a Super App?

A super app is a single platform that handles many everyday tasks, from messaging and shopping to payments and booking. WeChat is the classic example in China. Whether that model can work as well in the U.S. is an open question, but TikTok appears determined to try.

Must Eat: Restaurant Discovery Inside TikTok

The new “Must Eat” feature turns viral food videos into a community-driven restaurant guide. It draws on more than 40 million posts and comments and lets users browse by city, then filter by cuisine, price, rating and location. That puts TikTok in direct competition with Yelp and Google Maps.

Payments: Sending Money in DMs

Bloomberg reported in August that TikTok is building a feature to send money between users through direct messages. It would use TikTok Pay, which already works for TikTok Shop purchases in Southeast Asia. Reuters also reported in March that TikTok applied to Brazil’s central bank for approval to offer lending and payment services.

Shopping: TikTok Shop’s Rapid Rise

TikTok Shop is the platform’s biggest leap beyond social media. It launched in the U.S. in 2023 and has since taken on Amazon and Shein. eMarketer says its U.S. sales rose 407% in 2024 and 108% in 2025, hitting $15.82 billion. It accounted for 18.2% of U.S. social commerce, with a forecast of 24.1% by 2027. The shop has also added gift cards and moved into luxury goods.

Travel: Book It Without Leaving the App

In May, TikTok launched TikTok GO in the U.S., which lets users find and book hotels, attractions and experiences inside the app. Viral travel videos can now lead straight to a booking, which puts TikTok in closer competition with Google’s Search and Maps.

Sports, Music and Entertainment

  • Sports: A FIFA World Cup hub launched in June with scores, schedules and highlights. TikTok also has partnerships with Major League Soccer and Major League Baseball.
  • Music: TikTok shut down its own streaming service in 2024 but now lets Apple Music subscribers play full songs inside the app.
  • Microdramas: TikTok added a Minis section and a standalone app called PineDrama for one-minute episodes.
  • Games: Casual games in DMs encourage users to play with friends.

Search and Maps

TikTok has built a search experience that shows maps, local hashtags, reviews, hours, star ratings and price ranges. The goal is to remove the need to switch to Google after you see a place in a video.

What It Means for Users and Competitors

For users, one app could replace several. For rivals, it’s a threat: Yelp, Google, Amazon, Spotify and streaming services all see TikTok creeping into their territory. The big question is whether Americans want a single app for everything.
